Well after a fabulous month on the road with Paul and Andi from ‘Follow our Motorhome’ it was time for our final soiree together and what better way to say ‘au revoir’ than with a sing song. And it went like a dream….

Not sure when you are heading to Crete but did you know there is a ferry strike on 16/17 May. we are currently at Old Epidavros and were due to go to Crete on 17 May. we used to live in Crete and travelled extensively in our motorhome so if you want any information we’d be pleased to help. happy travelling.
Hi Vera, thanks so much for getting in touch. We arrived in Crete first thing this morning, so just in time before the strike impacted. We loved Epidavros and made a great new friend in one of the local, feral dogs. Any help would be gratefully received regarding Crete as it’s been a bit of a frustrating morning. I think we’ve been spoilt with wild camping in Peloponnese and Sissi Campsite is nice enough although a bit basic. We’re here for three weeks in total and my mum arrives on Friday for seven days. So we’re trying to show her as much as possible without loads of travelling. We’re thinking of hiring a car so we can get to some of the out of the way places without the Moho and doing three days north at Sissi and then south for three. We’d love to do the Gorges in the east although with a four hour journey one way, it’s not going to happen. So highlights in the east (we’ve already got Kritsa on the list as we’ve been there before and Spinalonga island, what else is doable in this region without too much driving. Also what about south, if we base ourselves at Camping no problem for example. After that we’re looking for some out of the tourist way, wild Crete in the 10 days or so that we have remaining before heading back to Piraeus. Thank you. Help much appreciated. Karen x
Hi Karen
Sorry not to have replied earlier but got caught up in strike and didn’t have internet access for few days and then couldn’t find the original page I posted on. I tried replying last night but it wouldn’t post so will start again.
As you are at Sissi it is worth going to Milatos just along the coast where there are several tavernas by the sea. We will be overnighting there on Sunday 28th. It is worth going up to the Lassithi plain via Moxos (Mochlos) . You mentioned Kritsa and we have overnighted in the car park there when we have had too much raki! Further up the mountain is Katharo, really out in the wilds, we saw some wolves there once.
If you are going further east up in the hills beyond Kalo Horio is Kalamafka and there is a brilliant traditional tavern by the river.
Further east is Vai where they filmed the Bounty adverts and also kato Zakros and we have parked by the beach overnight, there are a couple of tavernas and some Minoan ruins. There is a little harbour between the two where we have stayed before but we cant remember its name.
We are also going to be at No Problem Agia Galini next Monday and Tuesday so might see you there.
To the west is Frangokastello with an old fort, we stayed under the battlements overnight. Chora Sfakion is worth visiting and is very pretty.
Right on the west is Paleochora, Camping Grammeno is right on the beach and is a nice site with a tavern next door.
Elafonissi, the pink coral beach, is worth seeing and the road from there up to Falassarna is amazing. We stopped at Sfinari where you can park by the sea overnight and you get lovely sunsets.
If you’d like to meet up before the weekend you’d be most welcome to come to our house at Ammoudara just outside Ag Nik, email me and I’ll give you a contact number and directions.
Just sent you a long reply but doesn’t seem to have gone. We were delayed in strike. We will be in Milatos on Sunday 28th then at Agia Galini for 2 days if you are around we could meet up. Will try sending again tomorrow morning. If you send private email I could send you our contact number.
Morning Vera, thanks in anticipation. You can get us at themotoroamers@gmail.com. We will be back in Sisi for the weekend after dropping mum off at the airport and then heading to Galini for 31 May for two days – as we’re meeting up with some either guys who spend a lot of time here. Although looking at your dates, perhaps we need to arrive 30th to work better? Let me know, be lovely to meet up. We’re leaving on 2nd to go further south. Have a safe trip here. Kx
