As we look back at 2017 and our highlights – Eastern Europe is going to always stand out to us. Whilst we love Western Europe, our curious souls sought more cultural education and east was where our hearts took us.
Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and all too briefly, Hungary. What delights these countries were with history, nature, cultural diversity and a world that has been teetering on the edge of communism into the European Union. What a fabulous six months we had. Collectively known as the Balkans, this area of south eastern Europe is a hot bed for history, culture and natural beauty. Whilst language may well separate these countries, there is a legacy that somehow seems to hold them together. A set of values that bind them and an opportunity for some incredible touring in your motorhome. Any one of these countries can of course stand alone in their own individuality, although as a collective tour, it will enrich your life beyond words.
So few people venture east, keeping to the safety of Spain and Portugal, although with this interactive map, we hope it will give you some food for thought for your adventures.
To bring our experiences to life, we have produced an interactive map that shows not only all the camping spots we stayed at during our tour, some of the highlights too. Combining our videos, Drone footage and blogs, you have one resource all in one place.
So if Eastern Europe is calling you for 2018 – then this interactive map complete with pictures and co-ordinates is all you need to ignite your plans. We hope that it gives you some seriously entertaining travel inspiration.
Click on any of the icons on the map for more information about each place we visited. Please bear in mind that we started from Italy, headed over to Greece, then had a short trip to Crete and then headed north through Bulgaria and Romania before having a short period in Hungary. For more blogs on Romania, click here or perhaps some videos on from Youtube channel might appeal.
I took buses mostly in this region, but if I ever road trip I’m definitely bookmarking this, great resource!
Hi Jac, thank you. I can imagine that buses would have been fun too. Camping is a great way to explore the region and where some of the buses don’t go. LOL> Kx
This looks great! I am planning a road trip next year around the Balkans. Super helpful post.
Thanks, we had a blast and really glad you found it useful. Myles
Liked reading it. BALKAL IS completely new area for me so really liked all the information
Thanks. It was a really great trip for us and can’t wait to go back and explore some more.
That must have been such an enjoyable trip! I am dreaming about road road tripping through the Balkans, I think this is one of the best ways to explore these countries 🙂
We had a great time and can’t wait to go back
One of the best parts of traveling is knowing that you really don’t need to ‘hurry’ anywhere and there are no chores waiting for you. It’s a freedom that can only be experienced via travel.
We have been found guilty from time to time of trying to cram too much in so now we hold the brakes and just enjoy the view.
Uncanny, we’re currently in Spain. I’m looking into a route from Greece back to UK, having booked our ferry to sail from Bari to Patras and then Pireaus to Heraklion for a few weeks in Crete. Was a little bewildered by the route north after exploring Greece, but your info has given me a few ideas. There were so many options I didn’t know where to start.
Many thanks
No worries. It’s a great trip. Enjoy.
Well we made it to Crete and have remained here throughout lockdown. Beginning some tentative steps to plan a route back to UK, mainland Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary any advice on the remaining journey?
Many thanks
Rachel
Hi Rachel, Crete is amazing, we adored our time there. What a lovely place to be locked down. We have co-incidently just done a route map for someone wanting to get back to Greece from UK, so your request is timely. Here is our route map through the Balkans back in 2017 with some rough way-marked pointers. And also I have given you a link to the google maps I created which offers a bit more of a navigational map, which might help.
